Digi Sign upgraded the existing roadside LED totem at the shared Crawford Clarke Cars and fonaCAB site in Belfast, replacing ageing P10 LED technology with a modern P3.9 outdoor LED display.

The existing totem occupied a highly visible roadside position serving both the Crawford Clarke Cars dealership and the fonaCAB office, but the original LED screen was reaching the end of its useful life.

Rather than removing a substantial structure that was still perfectly serviceable, Digi Sign retained the existing totem and upgraded the digital display technology within it.

The challenge

The roadside totem was already an established and prominent part of the Crawford Clarke Cars and fonaCAB site.

Its structure and location remained suitable, but the original P10 LED display had become dated compared with modern outdoor LED technology.

With a pixel pitch of approximately 10 mm, the older display provided significantly less image detail than newer systems.

The objective was to improve the quality and capability of the digital display without unnecessarily rebuilding the complete roadside sign.

Upgrading from P10 to P3.9

Digi Sign replaced the existing LED system with a modern P3.9 outdoor LED display.

Reducing the pixel pitch from approximately 10 mm to 3.9 mm dramatically increases the number of pixels available within the same physical display area.

This allows much sharper text, graphics, branding, promotional messages and imagery to be displayed.

For a prominent roadside installation serving both an automotive dealership and one of Belfast's best-known taxi operators, the improvement in visual quality is substantial.

Retaining the existing roadside structure

One of the key strengths of the project was the ability to reuse the existing totem.

The original structure remained in position while Digi Sign removed the ageing LED technology and integrated the new P3.9 display into the upper section.

This meant the established roadside signage and Crawford Clarke Cars branding below could remain intact.

Where an existing structure remains structurally and commercially suitable, upgrading the digital technology can make considerably more sense than replacing the complete installation.

Installation and integration

Access equipment was erected around the totem to allow the existing LED equipment to be removed and the replacement system installed safely.

The new P3.9 LED display was integrated into the existing enclosure, with appropriate access retained for servicing and maintenance.

Once commissioned, the digital section of the totem was transformed while the main structure remained in place.

Modernising older LED signage

LED display technology has developed considerably over the last decade.

Many businesses still operate older P10, P8 and similar outdoor LED installations where the structure remains perfectly usable but the screen technology itself is becoming dated.

In these circumstances, Digi Sign can assess the existing sign and determine whether it can be upgraded using modern LED technology.

This can provide a major improvement in display quality while reducing unnecessary structural work.

The result

Crawford Clarke Cars and fonaCAB now have a modern P3.9 outdoor LED display operating within their established roadside totem in Belfast.

The project retained the existing structure while replacing the ageing P10 screen with substantially higher-resolution LED technology.

It demonstrates Digi Sign's ability to upgrade and modernise existing LED installations rather than automatically recommending complete replacement.

Is your existing LED screen becoming outdated?

An ageing LED display does not necessarily mean the complete sign needs replaced.

Digi Sign can assess the existing structure, LED screen and control system and advise whether newer technology can be retrofitted into the current installation.

We provide LED upgrades, refurbishment and complete new outdoor LED systems throughout Northern Ireland, Ireland and the UK.
